Steven Spielberg
apparently saw last year's indie hipster romantic comedy "Safety Not
Guaranteed" and thought, "This guy could do wonders with rampaging CG
dinosaurs."
The oft-delayed fourth installment in the "Jurassic Park"
franchise just took one (rather large) step toward further becoming a
reality as Colin Trevorrow has signed on to direct the new sci-fi action
adventure, the plot details of which are of course being kept under
wraps (perhaps because there's no completed script yet, but that's just a
guess).
Trevorrow became quite the
Sundance darling when "Safety Not Guaranteed" (which could be the motto
for disgruntled employees of Jurassic Park) played at the 2012 festival
to critical and audience acclaim. The film, which chronicles the oddball
and perhaps slightly supernatural romance between a magazine reporter
(Aubrey Plaza) and a a guy who placed a classified ad seeking a
companion for time travel (Mark Duplass), won the fest's Waldo Salt
Screenwriting Award for Derek Connolly's script and later took home the
Independent Spirit Award for Best First Screenplay.
"Jurassic Park 4" has been wallowing in development hell since, well, shortly after the Joe Johnston-directed "Jurassic Park III" was released in Summer 2001. The project was all thought extinct until January when Universal announced that "Jurassic Park IV" would hit theaters during the summer of 2014 with Steven Spielberg once again producing with Frank Marshall (former "Jurassic Park" co-producer Kathleen Kennedy is busy with that whole "Star Wars" thing).
An up-and-coming director scoring a
major studio tentpole after having previously made a well-received but
much, much smaller-scale indie romantic comedy isn't that rare an
occurrence these days, as Marc Webb got the "The Amazing Spider-Man" gig with only "(500) Days of Summer"
on his feature directing resume. Apparently if you want to direct the
latest installment of a big Hollywood sci-fi franchise, all you have to
do is make a quirky indie comedy about two weirdoes falling in love.
"Jurassic Park IV" will be released on June 13, 2014. Meanwhile, the 3D reworking of the original "Jurassic Park" will be unleashed on April 5.
