Sleep is a very important part of a child’s day.
Now-a-days, most children are almost as busy as adults – going to
school, attending classes for various activities and sports, getting
homework done and squeezing in “TV time” before they eat their dinner
and go to bed. With more and more gizmos like computers, daddy’s mobile
phone etc., vying for their attention, it’s not surprising that children
want to do more and more and sulk when we call it a day on their
behalf.
Importance of sleep- Sleep allows the body to rest and rejuvenate before tackling the next day and the day after that and so on. It helps strengthen immunity and growth hormone secreted during sleep enables the body to grow.
- Sleep is important for memorising and learning things. Also, sleep is important for unlearning things. For example when a child rides a bicycle he will fall till he learns how to balance. The mind unlearns how to fall but retains how to ride without falling. This is tremendously important as a child learns and discovers new things every day.
- Dreams are dreamt while sleeping. Some children may recall their dreams vividly while others may not be able to recount a dream at all. This is normal and should not cause any concern. Only when dreams become nightmares and the child is afraid to sleep alone in his/her bed for fear of the nightmare returning is it time to sit up and take heed.
- When a child sleeps well, parents also get to sleep better as there they are less anxious about the child waking up at night.
